MailChimp bans ICOs – but it was never against their terms

MailChimp has begun to remove accounts of users who send out emails relating to initial coin offerings (ICO’s).

They have begun contacting users today through email, to inform them of the new changes, however many users have been complaining for months about not receiving ICO related emails that they signed up for.

In a statement made to futurism the company pointed out this is a violation of their acceptable use policy quoting:

Also, we cannot allow businesses involved in any aspect of the sale, transaction, exchange, storage, marketing or production of cryptocurrencies, virtual currencies, and any digital assets related to an Initial Coin Offering, to use MailChimp to facilitate or support any of those activities.

However upon investigating we find that policy was only just added today. A copy of yesterdays acceptable use policy recorded by archive.org clearly shows the cryptocurrency additions did not exist.

So if you are planning on running a news letter, mailing list, or anything else relating to cryptocurrency, mailchimp is no longer the service to use.

If it’s not clear to readers yet, there is an all out attack on cryptocurrency taking place in the corporate world.

To date facebook has banned ICO advertising, google has banned ICO advertising, twitter has banned ICO advertising, snapchat has banned ICO advertising, and now mailchimp will no longer allow you to run mailing campaigns.

It does not matter if your users opted in or not. Its time to back up your lists, and move to a new service.
